Art in the Caves

Join Devon based professional artist Mike McDonald for an art masterclass and then find your spot in the caves to sketch Nature's underground beauty.  This two and a half hour experience includes one-to-one tuition and access into the caves.  Suitable for beginnners and experienced artists. Firestone Kitchen open for meals and drinks.

The evening will run as follows: 

18:30 – Arrival
18:30 – 18:50 Cave familiarisation tour with owner Nick Powe
18:50 – 19:30 Art sketching Masterclass with Mike McDonald
19:30 – 20:45 Sketching in the caves in place of your choice – Mike will give you one-to-one tuition
20:45 – 21:00 Wrap up and finish

Kents Cavern’s café, the Firestone Kitchen, will be open for meals, coffee, drinks and snacks. Download our menu here

Suggested kit list:

  • Portable sketching pad or pads. Smooth drawing paper would be an ideal surface.
  • Small selection of watercolour tubes or pans. Suggested colours – Light Red, Permanent Rose, French Ultramarine, Phthalo Blue, Raw Sienna, Idigo and Rowney Lemon Yellow or Winsor & Newton’s Winsor Lemon. A lightweight mixing palette
  • 2B and 4B drawing pencils
  • Waterproof black or sepia drawing pens
  • Nos 2, 6, and 10 round brushes. 3/4 inch flat brush.
  • Carry bag.  The whole lot should be easily portable.
  • A small camping stool or chair
  • A head-torch

A head-torch is a must, wear suitable clothing and sturdy footwear. The caves are a constant 14c. Recommended for 16+.  Any under 16s must be accompanied by a full paying adult. No price concessions for children.This event is part ofthe Stone Age Festival, a week-long programme, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
